Physical exercise likely cannot alleviate the damage caused by prolonged sitting. About This Conversation said Daniel Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Sports Medicine and Health, Brunel University (UK).
Bailey said technological advances in recent years have eliminated the need for people to move. Since the human body is designed to move, such a large-scale change in lifestyle cannot have a negative impact on the health of people around the world. A sedentary lifestyle is known to increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes and other health problems.
This is evidenced by the results of a study by scientists at the University of California, which included 5,856 women. For seven days, subjects ranging in age from 63 to 99 wore special hip devices to track physical activity. Further analysis of the data showed that participants who sat for more than 11 hours a day had a 57% higher risk of death than those who sat for less than nine and a half hours a day.
But exercise may not reverse the damage caused by sitting. Another study, conducted by experts at the University of Bedfordshire, showed that intense physical activity did not reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, which are increased by too much sitting, Bailey said.
Bailey explained that “too much” means sitting for 11 hours or more each day. Some scientists argue that seven hours of sitting is already a long time that has the potential to worsen your health.
