Scientists from the University of Tokyo found that women with depression are more likely to suffer from heart attack, angina, stroke and other heart problems than men with mental disorders. The study results were published in JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology) Asia.

For the study, researchers analyzed health data from 4.1 million men and women to find links between depression and heart attack, stroke, and angina (pain or pressure in the chest that occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough blood or oxygen).

It was revealed that participants of both genders with depression had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, this risk was higher in women; 64% compared to 39% for men. Scientists noted that women are more likely to experience depression during hormonal changes such as the menstrual cycle and menopause. According to researchers, symptoms of depression in women can be more severe and persistent, which can lead to deterioration in physical health.

Compared with healthy women, participants with depression had a 52% increased risk of heart attack, a 68% increased risk of angina, a 56% increased risk of stroke and a 64% increased risk of heart failure, the researchers added. According to the authors of the study, future results may contribute to the development of new and more effective approaches to the treatment of depression in women.
