Scientists from the International SETI Extraterrestrial Intelligence Research Institute announced that they have discovered a new giant volcano on Mars. The object was named Noctis, which means “night” in Latin. The research was published in the official gazette Web site SETI Institute.

Noctis is located in the volcanic province of Tharsis or Tharsis, located near the equator of Mars. There are other large Martian volcanoes in the same area: Mons Pavonis (height – 14,000 meters), Mons Askrey (18,000 meters) and Mons Arsia (19,000 meters).

Although the exposed mountain is more eroded and less tall than other volcanoes on the Red Planet, its scale is still impressive, according to experts; Its diameter is 450 kilometers and its height reaches 9022 meters.

Volcano Noctis’ size and complex history of change indicate that it has been active for a very long time. The researchers also said that new thin volcanic deposits were found in the southeastern part, and ice probably still exists beneath them.

SETI noted that the presence of ice at shallow depths near the equator means humans could potentially explore a cooler region of Mars while also extracting water to support life and produce rocket fuel.
