Ecologist Roman Pukalov, director of environmental programs at the All-Russian public organization Green Patrol, said that climate change will become a serious problem for Russia and will affect both the southern and northern regions. New climate conditions will lead to prolonged temperatures, droughts, floods and other extreme natural events, warned He spoke to the Public News Service and urged Russians to prepare for this.
The main threat for Russia will be the increase in air temperature in the Arctic region. According to Pukalov, the far north is warming twice as fast as other parts of the world: 2.5-3 degrees per year, compared to 1-1.5 degrees in other regions. This threatens the melting of permafrost.
“More than 60 percent of Russia’s territory is in permafrost. The ecologist stated that the dangers here are especially the collapse of the foundations.
He added that in the Russian part of the Arctic, businesses, oil pipelines and house foundations are located on frozen soil, and thawing them would lead to accidents.
New risks to agriculture will also emerge; these will be primarily associated with periods of extreme heat and drought. The ecologist believes that similar situations occur today and may become more dangerous and frequent. During such dry periods crops will need to be replaced with more suitable ones. Farmers also need to take care of their irrigation systems in advance.
“The fact that droughts will occur cannot be avoided. There will also be heavy rains and floods, so new crops need to be resistant to hail and heavy, prolonged rains,” said Pukalov. “You need to be prepared for this: the crops will either be flooded or dry out.”
Let us remind scientists that: warned47% of the Amazon rainforest is at risk from future fires and droughts. According to them, a large-scale collapse of ecological systems is approaching.
