Scientists from Capital University in China found that diseases included in metabolic syndrome (high blood pressure, high blood sugar and cholesterol levels, excess belly fat) may be risk factors for certain types of cancer. Research results published In the journal Cancer.
44,115 Chinese adults and women participated in the study. It was stated that the average age of the subjects was 49. Researchers collected information about the participants’ health status, measured blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and recorded height, weight, waist circumference and blood pressure.
Using the information obtained, researchers divided the participants into four groups based on the severity of metabolic syndrome symptoms. Metabolic syndrome is a metabolic disease associated with obesity, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. After this, the observation phase began, which lasted from 2006 to 2021.
During this period, 2271 cancer cases were detected. Researchers calculated that compared to participants without metabolic syndrome, those prone to developing metabolic syndrome had a 1.3, 2.1, 3.3, 4 times higher risk of developing all types of breast, endometrial, kidney, colon and liver cancer. 0.5, 2.5 and 1.6 times respectively.
According to scientists, prevention and timely treatment of metabolic syndrome are important tools to reduce the likelihood of developing many types of cancer. However, the specific mechanisms underlying the relationship between metabolic syndrome group diseases and cancer still await investigation.
