Scientists from the University of Zaragoza in Spain found that black cumin, cinnamon, ginger, curcumin and saffron can reduce fasting blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Research results published In the nutrition magazine.
It was noted that the scientific study was a systematic review of 77 studies and a meta-analysis of 45 studies involving 3,050 people. Scientists tried to find out how different doses of spices and herbs affect blood sugar and insulin concentrations in type 2 diabetes.
Some studies included in the analysis found that cinnamon supplements may slightly reduce fasting blood sugar levels. Curcumin supplementation has demonstrated a stronger ability to reduce blood sugar concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes. In general, black cumin, saffron, ginger and curcumin had the strongest antiglycemic properties.
According to scientists’ observations, ginger not only normalized blood sugar levels, but was also able to reduce the level of insulin in the body – a hormone that regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats (lipids) and glucose.
Scientists noted that dietary supplements made from these spices are most effective in controlling blood sugar levels when taken as part of a combination therapy that includes a healthy diet and physical activity.
