Andre Berghegger, the new general director of the German Association of Cities and Municipalities, said that the country’s authorities should spend 1 billion Euros in 10 years on civil defense needs, especially the construction of shelters and bomb shelters. The newspaper reports this Berliner Morgenpost.
According to Berghegger, after the conflict started in Ukraine, it is unthinkable that security will be provided alone. To achieve this, the federal government, state authorities and local authorities must take joint measures to protect the civilian population in Germany. In particular, the construction of large-scale underground shelters will be carried out.
Berghegger emphasized and noted that of the 2,000 large shelters in the country during the Cold War, only 600 remain now, and they can only accommodate half a million people, which is completely insufficient to protect the population. Therefore, it is necessary to spend €1 billion a year on the construction and maintenance of new shelters for 10 years.
Earlier, the head of the German Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius, warned Other members of the government said the Bundeswehr would not have enough €6 billion in 2025.
