Women infected with high-risk HPV types and suffering from metabolic syndrome are almost three times more likely to die than women without these conditions. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. PLOS One.
Researchers used data from 3,274 women. Patients suffering from both high-risk HPV and metabolic syndrome had a 2.6 times higher risk of death.
Additionally, more than a quarter of women with metabolic syndrome were infected with high-risk HPV. This may mean that metabolic syndrome increases the risk of infection. Scientists believe this may be due to a weakened immune response and chronic inflammation, but only further research can confirm this hypothesis.
There are more than 200 known types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Most are not dangerous, but a few are responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. Previous studies have shown that women with metabolic syndrome (large waist circumference, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and other symptoms) are more likely to be infected with HPV. People with metabolic syndrome are approximately 65% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and have a 25% higher risk of death.
Scientists added that the vaccine protects against the most dangerous known types of HPV and minimizes the risk of cervical cancer. However, regardless of vaccination status, every woman needs regular cervical cancer screening.
