Facial numbness, noise and whistling in the ears may be signs of a tumor in the auditory nerve. Doctor and TV presenter Elena Malysheva and neurosurgeon Pavel Ivanov (Sergey Berezin Medical Institute) talked about this in the program. “Live healthy!”.
A woman speaking in the program said that she went to doctors complaining of numbness on the right side of her face. The patient was diagnosed with neuroma or schwannoma, a benign tumor of the auditory nerve. Neurosurgeon Ivanov explained that this tumor consists of cells in the auditory nerve sheath.
The tumor also pressed on the facial nerve, causing numbness. Malysheva added that neuroma is also characterized by noise, whistling in the ears and balance problems.
Radiation can be used to remove the tumor, as the neurosurgeon said: a gamma knife. This method does not require an incision and does not damage healthy tissue. During the procedure, which takes several minutes, the patient’s head is fixed using a special frame. As stated by the patient, he did not feel any discomfort during the removal of the tumor.
The voice that trembled before connected with risk of dementia.
