State of emergency and curfew imposed in the capital of Haiti

Haitian authorities decided to impose a state of emergency and curfew in the capital Port-au-Prince for at least three days due to the conflict between armed gangs and law enforcement. TV channel reported this telesur.

The administration noted that the measure does not apply to law enforcement officers, firefighters, ambulance drivers, healthcare workers and journalists. The channel warned that police have been instructed to use all legal means to enforce the curfew and arrest all criminals.

On March 2, members of the armed group attacked the country’s main prison in Port-au-Prince and freed hundreds of prisoners. Pogroms and attacks on civilians followed.

The situation in Haiti has worsened in 2021 following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the earthquake. Criminal gangs now control more than 80% of the capital’s territory, according to Telesur. The media reported that some criminal groups were planning to overthrow Henri’s government by force.
