The desire of pet owners to treat their pets to something tasty from the owner’s table can lead to dire consequences. Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Russian University of Biotechnology (ROSBIOTECH) Andrey Rudenko warned about this, writes RT.
The expert particularly drew attention to one of the deep-rooted stereotypes regarding dog nutrition. We are talking about bones, which are considered the best treatment for these animals.
However, according to the expert, many dogs currently cannot digest bones. They are all due to changes in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract that occur during the cultivation of decorative breeds.
“For this reason, we, veterinarians, often encounter problems such as compression of these bones and irritation of the gastrointestinal system, and we often have to perform surgery to remove them from the body,” Rudenko said.
The doctor of veterinary sciences added that only high-quality or farm products from deli meats are suitable for dogs. If raw meat has been treated with any substance to extend its shelf life, its consumption may cause gastrointestinal irritation in animals.
Well-cooked porridge is also a good part of a dog’s diet. However, this does not apply to wheat porridge and barley as they are difficult to digest.
The expert also listed the products that are strictly prohibited to be given to animals. These include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic. Some of these products can cause serious poisoning with the worst possible consequences.
“I want to say something about alcohol. It is a common practice to pour strong drinks such as vodka into the mouth of a sick animal. Veterinarians do not recommend doing this, especially for small animals,” emphasized the expert.
