In 90% of cases, bad breath is caused by dental causes. These include tartar, caries, stomatitis, periodontitis and others. Pavel Pisarev, dentist-therapist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told socialbites.ca.

“Halitosis (bad breath) is the first symptom of tooth decay, diseases of the mucosa of the oral cavity and poor quality dentures. In these cases, the unpleasant odor is constantly felt by the person, and oral hygiene products help to cope with bad breath for a short time and cannot completely eliminate the problem,” explained Pisarev.

As a rule, in such diseases of the oral cavity the smell is putrid. Other odors may indicate the development of other pathologies.

“For example, a fishy odor reminiscent of ammonia could be a warning sign of kidney failure. The job of the kidneys is to remove toxic chemicals from the blood and produce urine, but if the kidneys become so damaged that they can no longer filter out waste and dangerous toxins, damage begins in the body. In this case, there is a fishy smell in the breath,” stated the expert.

In diabetics, fruity breath or the smell of nail polish remover (acetone) may be indicators of the development of ketoacidosis. This is an acute complication in which the body derives energy from fatty acids due to insulin deficiency. This produces acidic ketones, and their accumulation in the blood can cause diabetic coma and even death.

“Various gastrointestinal diseases are another cause of bad breath. The dentist concluded that with gastroesophageal reflux, bad breath will have a sour taste, and with ulcers and inflammation of the duodenum, it will “smell” like rotten eggs.
