Disordered sleep is linked to poorer cardiovascular health in middle-aged people, but a new study found that physical activity may help offset this. This was reported by health.com.

Scientists have found that insufficient sleep can lead to increased waist circumference, increased blood sugar and fat levels, as well as hypertension. However, physical activity may have counteracted some of the effects of sleep deprivation.

Another study found that having trouble falling asleep, waking up during the night, or sleeping less than six hours a night can nearly triple your risk of heart disease.

Scientists suggest that insufficient sleep can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet. It is also possible that lack of sleep disrupts the control of the heart and blood vessels for which the autonomic nervous system is responsible. At the same time, the body is constantly under stress and in a “fight or flight” state.

Health experts said it’s important to sleep in a dark, cool place to improve sleep. Physical activity during the day, routine calming activities (reading or a hot bath) before bed, and avoiding electronic devices before bed also contribute to good sleep.
