Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden found that people infected with the herpes simplex virus were twice as likely to develop dementia compared to people who had never contracted the virus. This was reported by daily mail.
It is believed that 50 to 80% of the US adult population is infected with herpes simplex virus. It remains dormant in the body, but during periods when the immune system is weakened (heat, hypothermia, cold, stress) the virus can cause a rash, also known as “cold sores.”
Researchers found that people infected with the herpes simplex virus were twice as likely to develop any form of dementia compared to those without the virus. Although the study is observational and cannot prove cause and effect, it is consistent with previous scientific studies.
It is believed that the virus may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease because parts of the virus remain in the body for life. There is some evidence that they travel to the brain, where they cause the formation of plaques made of beta-amyloid and tau proteins that are characteristic of dementia.
