A substance derived from sandalwood oil prevented the development of prostate cancer in mice. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Herbal Medicine Plus.
Sandalwood seed oil has been used worldwide for centuries in perfumes, soaps, incense and candle making, and in medicine. 90% of sandalwood oil consists of two compounds: alpha and beta santalol.
In previous studies, scientists have shown that alpha-santalol inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells and triggers apoptosis (programmed self-destruction). This is a process the body uses to get rid of unwanted or abnormal cells, including cancer cells.
In the new study, scientists obtained genetically modified mice with a high risk of prostate cancer. Only 11% of the alpha-santalol group developed a prostate tumor, while more than half of the control (untreated) group developed a tumor. The substance did not cause weight loss or other noticeable side effects.
Early diagnosis of prostate cancer is associated with a better prognosis and the possibility of complete cure. The authors believe alpha-santalol may be a treatment to slow the progression of advanced prostate cancer.
