Coffee may reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to a study conducted by Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. results published at Harvard T.H. Chan School.

Drinking moderate amounts of coffee (up to five cups a day) is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, liver cancer, endometrial cancer (a cancer that develops in the epithelial layer of the body of the uterus), Parkinson’s disease, and depression.

These results were obtained during the study when analyzing information on more than 208 thousand people aged 25 to 75 years. After collecting information about the health status and nutritional habits of the subjects, the scientists moved on to the observation phase. It turns out that people who drink coffee regularly are less likely to suffer from mental disorders, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. The results also showed that decaffeinated coffee had similar beneficial effects.

But it’s not entirely clear why coffee is such a healthy beverage. Commenting on the results of the research, Professor Hu noted that coffee is a very “complex” drink. It contains many biologically active compounds; perhaps hundreds, even thousands. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the specific effect of each.
