The number of delivery and pickup orders from restaurants in Russia exceeded the Covid level by almost 50%. This is shown by a study of the Restik platform, the results of which were reviewed by socialbites.ca.

The number of delivery and pickup orders at food and beverage businesses has increased exponentially during Covid. After the pandemic, this number fell by more than 20 percent and did not exceed Covid levels until the end of 2022. This is probably because people miss eating out.

By the end of 2022, the average number of orders delivered by couriers and received by visitors per business reached the pandemic period figure and continued to increase rapidly in 2023. The study showed that the number of delivery and pickup orders is now 48% higher than during Covid.

Interestingly, if during covid self-pickup accounted for only 8% of all delivery and pickup orders, then today the share of self-pickup has increased to 25%. Since the Covid period, the number of orders picked up by guests on their own has increased by 3.5 times, while the number of orders delivered by courier has increased by only 30%.

These data show that a culture of consuming ready meals outside restaurants emerged during the pandemic period. People have accepted the idea that cooking at home is not always necessary. Therefore, they willingly escape this responsibility, especially on weekends – most meals are ordered from restaurants around 19:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

At the same time, despite the fact that the number of delivery and pickup orders in establishments has increased, the share of catering establishments where it is possible to order online has still not exceeded the Covid level. This is because after the pandemic, a long trend has emerged to disable online orders in establishments whose concept does not include the preparation of dishes for delivery. They are now slowly being replaced by new places that initially incorporate online orders into their concepts.

“Most likely, the number of catering establishments offering delivery and pickup will begin to grow faster in the near future, as the “exit” of organizations that introduced delivery only during the period of restrictions ends. This is beneficial primarily for the owners themselves: the average check for delivery is 2000-3000 rubles, and in a physical restaurant from 1000 to 1300 rubles,” says Oleg Suzhaev, founder and CEO of the Restik platform.
