The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun developing a plan to ban the use of formaldehyde in hair straightening products. This has been reported KFF Health News.
Keratin hair straightening is a process applied by experts and allows you to have smooth hair for several months. Products used for this purpose contain formaldehyde, a substance considered carcinogenic in the United States and other countries.
Recent studies have shown that hair straightening products may increase the risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. Some experts attribute this effect to other ingredients in hair products: phthalates, parabens, and other substances that can disrupt hormones. Black women are particularly vulnerable: Surveys show that 84% to 95% of women in the US use hair straightening products.
Given recent research, the FDA has proposed a plan to ban chemical straighteners that contain formaldehyde or can turn into formaldehyde when heated.
