Dizziness is a common symptom associated with many medical conditions. In their study, researchers sought to identify specific conditions that may increase the lethality of symptomatic dizziness. To do this, they invited nearly 9,000 adult Americans to participate.
The researchers collected information about the subjects’ health status and asked them to report whether they had experienced symptomatic dizziness in the past year. A follow-up phase then began in which deaths were continuously recorded for the volunteers.
The results showed that dizziness may be associated with death from many causes, including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Scientists explained that the connection of this symptom with cancer could not be accurately evaluated due to insufficient information content of the data. It was also noted that there was no relationship between dizziness due to head injuries (without subsequent falls) and an increase in the number of deaths.
