Scientists from Purdue University in the USA found that women have a higher risk of falling from the stairs than men; these women make up approximately 80% of the victims. Research results published In the journal PLOS ONE.
Scientists used video surveillance to record the movements of about 2,400 people going up and down the stairs. In total, filming took several months. Analysis of video recordings showed that most falls occurred due to carelessness and risky behavior.
Researchers have identified several types of such behavior. This includes ignoring what’s going on underfoot, not using handrails, wearing high heels, preoccupying your hands with bags and other objects, using your phone, jumping over steps, and putting your hands in your pockets.
It is noted that men tend to jump down steps and not look at their feet. Women generally do not hold on to railings, use tools, or go up and down stairs with their hands full.
Experts have calculated that in 80% of cases, it was women who were injured when falling down the stairs. Most likely, this is due to the desire to multitask and therefore become distracted.
