Mobile sports betting on online platforms contributes to riskier gambling behavior and gambling addiction. Scientists from the Australian State University in Queensland came to these conclusions. results published In Journal of Behavioral Addictions (JBA).
To examine the complex dynamics and potential harms of smartphone betting, researchers used an ecological momentary assessment method. It involves collecting data in real time. The scientists were able to obtain information directly from participants about 1,378 betting sessions.
Participants were young people aged 18-29 who bet on sports or e-sports at least twice a week. Researchers collected information about participants’ mental health, the betting platforms they frequently use, and their negative experiences with gambling.
The results showed that the ability to place bets from anywhere at any time while preserving privacy was a significant indicator of addiction development. The same features that make betting on smartphones attractive and convenient can also lead to riskier gambling behavior.
Additionally, smartphone betting was associated with a higher likelihood of later using a computer or laptop for similar purposes.
Scientists noted that the high accessibility, attractiveness and anonymity of such activities can lead to the development of impulsive behavior and potential gambling addiction. At the same time, wide access to promotions of bookmaker clubs is associated with betting with a larger number of operators.
