American nutritionist Michael Mosley said The Daily Mail reveals that genes that predispose people to addiction (including food addiction) are associated with the release of dopamine in the brain. Symptoms of addictive behaviors include impulsivity and a constant desire for reward.

Addiction is a lack of control over doing, taking or consuming something, Mosley said. He noted that in addition to cigarette and alcohol addiction, there are more “harmless” types of addiction, including food addiction.

The expert referred to a study conducted by scientists from Yale University showing that foods high in fat and carbohydrates (chocolate, chips, fast food and cookies) can cause addiction in some people. Most likely, daily consumption of products with such a composition reorganizes the functioning of the brain.

Not every person becomes addicted immediately. The tendency to engage in this type of behavior stems from a combination of genes, upbringing, personality traits, and social status. However, the basis of any addiction is the powerful release of the dopamine hormone that occurs when a certain addictive action is performed. This is accompanied by all moments that bring joy to a person – delicious food, pleasant smells, communication with a pet and relaxation.

Mosley noted that certain personality traits, such as impulsivity (the tendency to act without thinking) and a strong desire for reward, can be signs of addictive behavior.
