Viagra may reduce the negative health effects of jet lag, reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and improve pulmonary hypertension. In this respect reports Daily Mail with links to research by scientists from the University of Washington and University College London.
A study by American scientists from the University of Washington found that men who do not take Viagra or similar drugs to treat erectile dysfunction are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. The drug was found to reduce the risk of dementia by 18% after adjusting for risk factors such as smoking, diet and alcohol consumption.
Researchers noted that Viagra affects a special cellular signaling device in the brain that is thought to be associated with memory.
This medicine also has the ability to relax blood vessels. Because of this property, it is sometimes prescribed for pulmonary hypertension. This condition occurs when the vessels that supply the lungs (pulmonary arteries) lose their elasticity and cannot widen enough to allow blood to pass through. This causes blood pressure to rise. Sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) relaxes blood vessels in the chest and reduces pressure in the lungs, allowing normal blood flow.
According to another study conducted by Argentinian scientists in 2007, Viagra also improves the regulation of circadian rhythms. An experiment involving hamsters showed that drugged animals were able to adapt better after simulated jet lag.
