Healthy nutrition expert Nick Fuller from the University of Sydney in Australia said: SpeechYou don’t need to rely on the scale when determining a healthy weight indicator. The truth is that the number on the scale does not tell you about the percentage and distribution of body fat.
A popular way to assess the adequacy of a person’s weight is to calculate their body mass index (BMI). It is a simple ratio of weight to height and is often used to classify obesity and overweight. The index is calculated as the ratio of body weight in kilograms to the square of height in meters (kg/m2).
Fuller explained that when estimating body weight this way, it is impossible to understand what percentage of the total weight consists of fat and muscle. He also noted that fat accumulations on the body surface may be distributed differently depending on body structure, ethnicity and age. All these indicators significantly affect the number of kilograms that need to be lost.
The doctor also said that if you are overweight, losing weight can improve your health. Losing just 5-10% of body weight (6 to 12 kg for a 120-kg person) is associated with lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as a lower risk of osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease, he said.
