We speak to scientists from the University of Bristol news portal The Conversation listed five diseases that can be diagnosed according to the condition of the skin.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and its condition can be used to evaluate a person’s health. So, red ham, or erythema migrans, so named for its ability to spread rapidly across the skin, is a hallmark of Lyme disease, which is transmitted through tick bites. Borreliosis occurs at the site of the bite of an infected tick, when the pathogen penetrates the skin with the saliva of the insect. A distinctive feature of erythema is that it constantly increases in size with simultaneous resolution of hyperemia in the center.

Another type of rash is purpura. These are fine dotted capillary hemorrhages that look like small purple or red dots. Purpura indicates a problem with the walls of the small blood vessels that nourish the skin or the blood within them. This can be caused by platelet deficiency or the life-threatening condition septicemia, where infection spreads to the bloodstream.

Spider veins are pathologically enlarged capillaries that become visible on the skin surface. They look like red or purple dots, stripes, and “webs.” There are many reasons for their appearance: it may be varicose veins, impaired blood microcirculation, hormonal disorders or lack of vitamins and microelements.

Darkened skin folds or acanthosis nigricans is hyperpigmentation of the skin often found in body folds and other areas. The skin often turns black or gray and becomes velvety. Acanthosis nigricans most often develops secondary to hormonal disorders, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, tumor processes and toxic effects.

Another symptom of heart disease is the presence of red spots on the face that resemble butterflies. This is the mitral fraction, in which the cheeks of a person with mitral stenosis are flushed and the rest of the face appears bluish.
