Frequent urination in overactive bladder syndrome can increase the risk of fracture by 3.4 times. This has been shown by a published study. International Journal of Clinical Practice.
1,136 patients aged 50 and over with overactive bladder syndrome participated in the study.
Participants who urinated frequently at night (three or more times per night) accounted for 70% of patients who suffered fractures. Overall, they were approximately 3.4 times more likely to experience a fracture than participants who got up to go to the bathroom two or fewer times a night. There is also an increased risk of bruising. Frequent urination at night was more common among women.
The authors believe that patients with overactive bladder syndrome and frequent nocturnal urination need improved treatment to prevent falls. This is particularly important for women, as women were a more vulnerable group in this study. Because they tend to lose muscle mass in their legs, they may fall more frequently, making it harder to maintain balance.
