Food prices by region: greater increase in the Canary Islands, less increase in Aragon

It is one of the 23 food and beverage groups that INE separates in its statistics. CPIIn 2023, the Canary Islands recorded the highest increase in eight (more than a third), while the lowest indices were more dispersed; Aragon (5) and Murcia (4) were at the forefront.

The five biggest increases across the country (what INE calls “headlines”) are oils and fats (36.3%), legumes and fresh vegetables (13.2%), pork (12.3%), fresh fruits (11.8%) and mutton (9.7%).

Oils and fats rose rapidly in Madrid but rose less in Cantabria; legumes have become more expensive in the Canary Islands and cheaper in Cantabria; The price of pork increased more in Aragon and less in Galicia; fresh fruits more in the Atlantic archipelago, less in the Mediterranean; and mutton was more abundant in Extremadura but fell in Asturias.

The cost of oils and fats, which are most affected by the increase in food prices, is 39.7% in Madrid, 39.1% in La Rioja, 38.9% in Extremadura, 38.4% in Catalonia and 37% in Andalusia, When reaching 2; It was “only” 25.1% in Cantabria, 30.4% in the Basque Country and 33.1% in the Canary Islands.

On the other hand, beef decreased in Murcia (-0.8%); sheep in Asturias (-1.8%) and the Balearic Islands (-1.3%); and that of birds in Galicia (-2.6%).

The cost of potatoes and their preparations increased by 18.2% in the Canary Islands last year, three times the average (6.8%) and more than 10% in La Rioja and Navarra, but only 2.7% in Valencia. In the Community, this rate decreased by less than 5% in Asturias, the Balearic Islands and the Basque Country, and even by 2.7% in Murcia.

Other headings that increased relatively less were coffee, cocoa and infusions (6.0%) and sugar (6.2%), with the highest rates in both cases being in the Balearic Islands and the highest at 7.2% and 11.9% respectively. The lowest rates are in Aragon with 3.9 and 2.3. % in each of these communities.

As for beverages, mineral water, soft drinks and juices increased by up to 13% in La Rioja and between 11 and 12% in Galicia, the Balearic Islands and Madrid, with smaller increases in Cantabria (5.0%), Aragon (5.5%)), Asturias (6.6%) and Catalonia (6.8%).

Alcoholic beverages made the least difference, however, despite a 6.6% increase in Murcia, double the 3.3% increase in Galicia.

Other meats, preserved fruits and nuts, legumes and vegetable preparations and other food preparations from the 23 food and drink categories allocated by the INE are not included in this information.
