Anti-aging skin care products are ineffective when you don’t get enough sleep. Certified American dermatologist Queen-Zhao Sartor talks about it said Daily Mail edition.
The doctor explained that without a healthy night’s sleep of seven to nine hours, the human body cannot effectively cope with oxidative stress, which is the damage caused to cells by reactive oxygen species. This process can be triggered due to changes in the intracellular environment. Violation of the redox state of cells leads to toxic consequences through the production of peroxides and free radicals. This imbalance is a powerful trigger for aging.
Sartor emphasized that in the case of lack of sleep, attempts to maintain the youthful appearance of the skin by using retinol or lactic acid-based skin care products will fail.
He also added that lack of sleep causes the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, to increase in the body. Excess cortisol can cause premature sagging and wrinkles in the skin. This is because this hormone breaks down collagen, a protein that works with other substances such as elastin to maintain skin elasticity. The dermatologist noted that quality sleep provides the body with more opportunities to produce collagen and elastin.
