Scientists have discovered special molecules in people’s blood that can detect lung cancer without a biopsy. This was reported by MedicalXpress.
Currently, if lung cancer is suspected, it is necessary to perform a biopsy, that is, to remove a small piece of organ tissue. This allows you to confirm cancer, determine the type of tumor and choose the best treatment. However, since this procedure is performed under anesthesia, it carries risks. Some patients refuse to have a biopsy due to potential danger.
More than a thousand people with or without lung cancer participated in the new study. Based on their data, scientists found two biomarkers of lung cancer and developed a new method to detect them. In this way, the content of these molecules can now be measured even at very low concentrations. Tests showed that the new method could diagnose lung cancer in two-thirds of patients with 95% confidence.
The study also found that in 13 percent of patients, the biopsy did not definitively determine whether they had lung cancer. Blood tests for tumor biomarkers may be particularly useful for these people.
