A healthy diet at one year old can reduce your baby’s risk of inflammatory bowel disease. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Bowel.

Cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, are becoming increasingly common. The reason for this trend has not been found, but it is thought to be related to changes in the diet of modern humans and their impact on the microbes living in the gut.

In the new study, researchers analyzed nutrition and disease data from nearly 22,000 people born in southeastern Sweden between 1997 and 1999, as well as data from 114,000 Norwegian children and their parents collected between 1999 and 2008.

Children given a healthier diet at age one were 25% less likely to develop IBD. A healthy diet was thought to consist of more vegetables, fruits and fish, and less meat, sweets, snacks and sugary drinks. Specifically, greater fish consumption at one year of age was associated with a 54% lower risk of ulcerative colitis. On the other hand, consuming sugary drinks at age one was associated with a 42% increased risk.

Meat, dairy, fruits, grains, potatoes, and foods high in sugar and/or fat were not associated with overall IBD risk. Antibiotic use, formula consumption, or family income at one year of age did not affect the results.

This is an observational study and therefore does not prove a causal relationship between childhood nutrition and IBD risk. Moreover, the findings may not be generalizable to other countries where people have different dietary habits and incomes.
