Scientists from Tufts University in the USA have discovered that the concept of “low-carb diet” can be quite vague. However, most researchers define this type of diet as limiting carbohydrate intake to 30% of total calories. results published In Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (CRFSN).
Recently, people’s interest in low-carb diets has increased. But despite the growing popularity of this diet, debate continues over how much carbohydrate intake each day follows a low-carb diet.
To find out, US scientists conducted a scientific review of more than 500 studies aimed at examining the properties and effects of low-carb diets on the body. In most of the studies included in the review, researchers defined a low-carb diet as limiting carbohydrate intake to 30% of total calories each day or consuming less than 100 grams of carbohydrates per day.
Typically, nutritionists set carbohydrate consumption at 50-80% of total calories (this is approximately 250-400 grams per day). This amount reflects an adult’s healthy carbohydrate needs.
Scientists noted that it is necessary to develop uniform criteria characterizing the low-carbohydrate diet as a type of nutrition. This will improve the effectiveness of public health interventions and more accurately assess the potential benefits of low-carbohydrate diets.
