Researchers from the E.P. Bradley Hospital Sleep Research Laboratory published the results of their study in the journal To sleepThis shows the harmful effects of alcohol on sleep quality. Scientists have found that REM sleep, which constitutes approximately 20% of night sleep and has important functions in terms of mental acuity and memory, is disrupted after drinking alcohol before bed.
The study was conducted on 30 adult volunteers who spent three nights under controlled laboratory conditions. Participants were divided into two groups; one of them drank a beverage with added alcohol an hour before bedtime. It turned out that even a single alcoholic drink over three nights led to an increase in the duration of the slow-wave sleep phase and reduced the duration of REM sleep.
Although the researchers stated that the participants were able to fall asleep faster after drinking alcohol, their sleep quality deteriorated due to the decrease in REM sleep duration. These results highlight the importance of avoiding alcohol consumption before bedtime to maintain healthy, quality sleep.
