Scientists have discovered a network of lymphatic vessels behind the nose that play a critical role in draining cerebrospinal fluid from the brain. Research that will improve understanding and treatment of neurodegenerative conditions is published in the journal Nature.

Waste products produced by brain cells are removed from the brain through the cerebrospinal fluid. Its outlet is provided by the lymphatic vessels around the cranial nerves and the upper region of the nasal cavity. It is believed that the accumulation of waste in the brain when its outflow is impaired can damage nerve cells and play a role in the development of various types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

In the new study, scientists used transgenic mice, glowing tag molecules, microsurgery and advanced imaging techniques. They identified a network of lymphatic vessels behind the nose that serve as the main drainage center for cerebrospinal fluid. Scientists managed to increase the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid using drugs containing phenylephrine and sodium nitroproside. It was effective even in old mice in which the structure and function of the nasopharyngeal lymphatic plexus was impaired.

The researchers now plan to confirm the observations in experiments on monkeys.
