Switching from gas to electric stoves could reduce the total loss of healthy life years of the Chinese population by 35%. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Eco-Environment and Health (EEH).
By modeling disease data from China’s urban areas and nitrogen oxide NO2 concentrations in 2019, scientists found that China lost 138 billion yuan and 1,675 DALYs due to gas-related diseases. The latter figure means that the Chinese population lost a total of 1,675 years of healthy life. The model created by the scientists showed that switching households from gas stoves to electric stoves could reduce these losses by 35%.
Exposure to nitric oxide NO2 is a risk factor for lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes. The study’s findings challenge the conventional wisdom that gas is a clean source of cooking energy. It also highlights the importance of comprehensive strategies to reduce NO2 exposure inside and outside homes.
“Switching from gas stoves to electric stoves is a simple and effective way to reduce NO2 exposure and improve public health,” the scientists concluded.
