Consuming licorice root increases blood pressure more than thought. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. AJCN.
Previous studies have shown that licorice root can increase blood pressure due to the glycyrrhizic acid it contains. In the new experiment, 14 men and 14 women, ages 18 to 30, took licorice equivalent to 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid.
Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were 109.1 mmHg. and 65 mmHg. Art. respectively. Consuming licorice every day for two weeks increased systolic blood pressure by three mmHg, as well as increased levels of aldosterone and renin hormones, which play important roles in blood pressure control.
Scientists concluded that further studies are needed on the effect of licorice, including confectionery, on blood pressure and the cardiovascular system as a whole. They also noted that the World Health Organization and the European Union recognize that it is safe to consume less than 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid per day in foods.
