Eating kiwi every day can improve the mood of people with low vitamin C levels within four days. This was shown by a study by scientists from the University of Otago published in the journal. British Journal of Nutrition (BJN).
The eight-week study included 155 adults with low vitamin C levels who took a daily vitamin C supplement, a placebo, or ate two kiwis.
Kiwi improved people’s mood and cheerfulness for four days; The maximum effect was observed on days 14 to 16. Vitamin C also improved mood, but not significantly.
The scientists believe their findings provide an effective and cost-effective way for people to support their mental health.
Vitamin C intake has previously been associated with good mood, well-being and a lower risk of depression, while vitamin C deficiency has been linked to greater depression and thought disorders. But studies have not evaluated how quickly mood improvements occur after vitamin C levels return to normal. The new study fills this gap.
