A team of oceanographers has mapped the largest deep-sea coral reef off the Atlantic coast of the United States. transmits Project “Snob” in reference to an article published in the journal Geomatics. It was recorded that polyps, algae and other organisms were found in an area of more than 25 thousand square kilometers.
Scientists reported that the reef extends for 500 kilometers across the states of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. In some places its width exceeds 100 kilometers. Depth varies between 200 meters and one kilometer.
Researchers state that the existence of the reef was known in the 1960s, but its size has only now been determined. Derek Sowers, one of the authors of the paper, said less than 25% of the world’s ocean floor has been mapped, so exploration of more extensive deep-sea reefs may be possible in the future.
In 2023, marine biologists from the University of Essex use the Alvin submarine discovered Pristine deep-sea coral reefs in a previously unexplored part of the Galapagos Islands Marine Reserve.
The find was hidden from scientists at a depth of 600 meters. The coral colony before them gave biologists hope that reefs could thrive in difficult times like now, when oceans are heavily polluted and sea temperatures continue to break records.
