Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University in China found a link between metabolic syndrome (obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension and hyperlipidemia) and a higher risk of osteoarthritis. Research results published BMC (BioMed Center) Public Health.

370,311 people with an average age of 58 participated in the research. Researchers collected information about the participants’ health status, diet, medications, physical activity level, body mass index and sociodemographic characteristics. After this, the observation phase of the subjects began, which lasted more than 12 years.

It turns out that people with metabolic syndrome, a metabolic disorder associated with obesity, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels), hypertension and hyperlipidemia (increased concentration of lipids or lipoproteins in the blood), have an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative-dystrophic disease of the joints caused by damage to cartilage tissue.

It is stated that excessive body weight most likely increases the mechanical load on the joints and alters serum cholesterol metabolism. This substance is constantly produced in the body and used in the construction of cell membranes. It also turns out that inflammation of the synovial membrane of joint tissue, which is characteristic of osteoarthritis, may be a consequence of disorders of lipid metabolism in the body.
