US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) employees managed to open a container filled with dust obtained from the asteroid Bennu. A British newspaper reports this Guardian.
Scientists at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston said they were finally able to open a container filled with asteroid dust, four months after parachuting into the Utah desert.
We are talking about rocks from the asteroid Bennu, obtained in 2020 as a result of the mission of the American automatic interplanetary station OSIRIS-REx. Most of the rock samples collected by the OSIRIS-REx mission were recovered shortly after the container landed in September. However, some of the material remained inside the sampling head and was difficult to access.
After months of persistent effort, scientists managed to remove the last two stuck fasteners. As a result, access was gained to one of the oldest materials in the solar system. This will allow us to better understand the formation process of planets and asteroids.
