Breathing through your mouth while sleeping at night can double your risk of nasal congestion and can also lead to fatigue and drowsiness. This was reported by daily mail.

Experts surveyed two thousand adults. 18% reported noticing their partner breathing through their mouth while sleeping. Of these, 31% regularly complained of nasal congestion. In the group that did not breathe through their mouth at night, only 15% complained of frequent nasal congestion.

Breathing through the nose is preferred because the nasal cavity filters small particulate matter (such as pollen) from the air.
It also humidifies and warms cold air.

“Mouth breathing can cause less oxygen to enter the body, and one of the problems this can cause is disrupted sleep and increased daytime fatigue. This also leads to dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease,” GP Dr Roger Henderson told the Daily Mail.

Dry mouth also increases the risk of upper respiratory tract infections and tonsillitis. It’s a vicious cycle, because nasal congestion can be both a cause and a consequence of mouth breathing. To break it down, it is recommended that you use saline spray or a nasal constrictor, sleep on your back, and see an ear, nose, and throat specialist to have your nasal septum checked.
