American Peregrine satellite completes an unsuccessful mission to the Moon

Astrobotic, the manufacturer of the US Peregrine spacecraft, announced that the mission to the Moon ended in failure due to malfunction. As the company reported on social network X, telemetry from the device disappeared at approximately 3:50 pm Eastern time.

The vehicle entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 4:04 PM ET, but the company is awaiting approval from the government. Peregrine was launched on a Vulcan rocket on January 8, with a planned lunar landing on February 23 carrying NASA’s scientific instruments and other cargo.

However, due to problems with the propulsion system and a fuel leak, the landing was canceled and the company decided to end the mission with a controlled insertion of the probe into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Peregrine was created as part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aimed to return the United States to the Moon with the help of private contractors, and the value of the contract for its creation was $108 million.
