Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, autoimmune diseases, immunodeficiencies and frequent colds are contraindications for ice hole diving. Lyudmila Salamatina, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, Rospotrebnadzor, specialist in functional diagnostics at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Federal Budgetary Institution, told socialbites.ca.
“When immersed in cold water, blood pressure rises sharply and heart rate accelerates, vessels experience tremendous hemodynamic stress. And if they have any defects, they are destroyed or even ruptured and blood clots form. This is a direct path to hemorrhages and thrombosis: the risk of stroke and heart attack in any organ increases sharply. Speaking to socialbites.ca, Salamatina makes it clear that swimming in icy water is life-threatening for people with chronic cardiovascular diseases.
Immersion in an ice hole is also contraindicated for those who have problems with the immune system. These include: frequent colds, cancer, allergies, autoimmune diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, HIV infection. Also, swimming in an ice pit is contraindicated for those suffering from coronavirus infection: this will only worsen the damage caused by the virus.
“Those who think that swimming in the ice pit will help restore immunity after Covid-19 are mistaken; the body cannot cope with such a load,” the cardiologist concluded.
Also about which groups of citizens can afford to swim in the ice hole and how to do it correctly, doctor Salamatina said In an interview with socialbites.ca.
