Russia may make genome recording of relatives of missing persons mandatory

In February, the State Duma of the Russian Federation may consider a bill on mandatory genome registration of close relatives of missing persons. As the newspaper wrote “News”The legislative amendment had already been approved in the first reading at the end of last year, and the government implemented the initiative in October.

The proposed amendment to the law consists in adding paragraph 5 of part 1 of article 7 of the Federal Law “On State Genomic Registration in the Russian Federation”, which defines the list of persons subject to mandatory genomic registration to include close relatives of missing persons.

Vasily Piskarev, chairman of the State Duma Security Committee, called the initiative very important, as as of January 1, 2023, approximately 28 thousand missing persons were searched in Russia, of which 960 were minors.

Genomic registration procedures are already used in many countries around the world to identify victims of disasters, disasters and crimes.
The creation of a database of genetic profiles could significantly speed up the process of identifying bodies of missing persons; This is especially important in cases where bodies are damaged or discovered so long after death that other methods of identification become impossible.

Genomic information should be stored until the missing person is located, but not for more than 70 years.
