Mangiferin, a substance derived from mangoes, helps the body fight colon cancer cells. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Scientific Reports.

Colon and rectum cancer is considered the third most common type of malignant tumors. Some of the factors that increase the risk of tumor development are malnutrition, stress, obesity, alcohol and smoking. Although many anticancer drugs have been developed against colorectal cancer, these synthetic substances are associated with many side effects such as hair loss, digestive problems, kidney and nervous system problems.

In the new study, scientists divided 15 mice into three groups. The first took Polysorbate 20 as a placebo, and the other two took high or low doses of mangiferin, a substance derived from the bark and leaves of the mango tree. All animals were exposed to oxidative stress, which damaged cell structures.

Rats given polysorbate alone developed multiple colon adenomas and adenocarcinomas with significant metastasis to other organs. However, in mangiferin-treated rodents, adenomas were smaller in size and spread more slowly. However, no serious side effects were observed in animals. Scientists’ findings need to be confirmed by human experiments.

As the authors found, mangiferin helped protect cells from damage by reactive oxygen species by increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzymes. This substance also significantly reduced levels of inflammatory biomarkers that are associated with increased cancer risk.
