Last year, 2023, was the hottest year in history. Abnormally high temperatures around the world indicate the existence of some new processes that have not yet been discovered but are already taking place. NASA chief climatologist Gavin Schmidt told Agence France-Presse (AFP). reports Phys.org.
The expert noted that 2023 will not only set new temperature maximums, but also break previous records by an unprecedented margin. This is partly due to the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, in which the central Pacific Ocean warms. Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions also contributed. However, scientists do not yet understand why temperatures are increasing sharply rather than smoothly.
According to Gavin Schmidt, the painting looks as if there is a hidden factor in it that has not yet been revealed.
Experts are currently putting forward various hypotheses, ranging from the unusually strong impact of El Niño to the disruption of the Earth’s energy balance. But none of them can yet convincingly characterize what is happening.
The expert added that 2024 will show whether we are talking about some kind of anomaly or the emergence of new systematic factors.
