Alkaline water may not affect urine pH enough to prevent kidney stones. This has been shown by a published study. Journal of Urology (Urol.J) .
To prevent the formation of some types of kidney stones, it is recommended to increase the pH of the urine, for example, using potassium citrate tablets. But many patients do not comply with the treatment regimen, avoiding taking large pills. Alkaline water manufacturers claim that it can make urine alkaline by reducing its acidity.
To evaluate the potential of alkaline water to prevent stone formation, scientists analyzed five brands of water and other beverages. The pH of normal water is about 7.5, while the pH of alkaline water is 8 to 10. But analysis has shown that alkaline water cannot raise the pH of the urine: it is not enough to compensate for the body’s natural acid production.
Unlike alkaline water, some other beverages, including orange juice, can provide adequate levels of alkaline in the urine. It contains substances that increase alkalinity approximately 150 times more than alkaline water. Baking soda can also be beneficial, but it can raise your blood pressure due to the sodium it contains.
Researchers noted that clinical studies in patients are needed to definitively prove whether alkaline water is beneficial or harmful in preventing kidney stones.
