The powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Japan on January 1, 2024 caused a significant rise in the land and caused the sea to retreat up to 250 meters from the shore in some places. This was noticed by Nahel Belgherze, a French independent expert in the field of satellite data analysis, who examined photographs of the region from space before and after the natural disaster. The expert shared the images on his own account page on social network X (formerly Twitter).

In particular, the coasts have risen on the Japanese Noto Peninsula in the central part of the island of Honshu. As a result of the incident, some marinas were cut off from the water and boats were prevented from accessing the water.

Belgerze’s findings were confirmed by experts from the University of Tokyo. The scientific institution noted that it detected 10 places that caused seismic rise on the coast in the region between Kaiso and Akasaki settlements due to the earthquake. According to researchers, the tremor also caused a tsunami of more than four meters high that hit the port of Akasaki.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Advanced Earth Observation Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) also recorded the coastal upwelling caused by the earthquake. Satellite images showed how the coastline was shifting seaward in several areas, including Nafune port, Wajima city and Minazuki Bay, according to a statement from Japan’s Geospatial Information Administration.
