Scientists from the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center in the USA found that Boswellia extract (frankincense extract) slowed the growth of tumors after tumors were removed for breast cancer. results published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment (BCRT).
The study included 22 breast cancer patients who had surgery to remove tumors. Every day for an average of 11 days (the time interval before surgery varied from 5 to 23 days for different participants), some subjects took Boswellia tree extract. Boswellia (frankincense) is a resin with significant anti-inflammatory activity. The daily dose of the substance was 2400 milligrams.
Following the interventions, the scientists compared the activity of cancer cells in tumor tissue removed during surgery and previously taken from all women during biopsy. A biopsy is a diagnostic procedure in which a sample of tissue or cells is taken and then examined under a microscope. It turned out that women who took frankincense extract had less active cancer cells. This is directly related to slowing tumor growth.
Despite the anti-cancer properties detected, frankincense extract cannot completely replace standard treatment, the scientists added. More research is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying Boswellia extract’s ability to reduce cancer cell activity.
