In Tallinn, half of the applications made to the civil registry office in the first two days of the new year were made by same-sex couples. Reported by state television and radio broadcasting portal MISTAKE.

On January 1, a law came into force in Estonia that allows two adults to marry, regardless of their gender. This law was passed by the Estonian Parliament in June this year.

“In the first days of the new year, 16 applications were made to the Tallinn registry office, 8 of which were from same-sex couples,” said Oksana Iin, a leading expert at the registry office.

According to the law, at least one month must pass after the application is made until the wedding. Thus, the first same-sex marriages in Estonia could take place as early as February.

In Estonian registry offices from the end of December seen New forms in which the terms “first wife” and “second wife” are used instead of the words “man” and “woman”. However, old-style forms are also available.
