Neuroscientists from the University of California (USA) found that essential oil scent during sleep helps increase the cognitive abilities of older people by 226%. The results of the research were published at: magazine Frontiers in Neuroscience.

43 elderly people aged between 60 and 85, divided into groups, participated in the study. The first was treated with aromatherapy with essential oils during night sleep, and the second was treated with placebo aromatherapy. Scents included rose, orange, eucalyptus, lemon, peppermint, rosemary and lavender oils. At the beginning and end of follow-up, participants were evaluated using MRI and underwent neuropsychological testing.

The results showed that the cognitive abilities of the participants in the first group increased by 226% compared to the control group, and brain MRI showed better integrity of the brain pathway connecting different areas responsible for decision-making and other cognitive functions.
